Electrical Requirements for Pools in Austin
Did you know that power lines can significantly influence where you can place a pool? In Austin, strict regulations set by Austin Energy govern the proximity of pools to utility lines, including both power and communications lines.
Following these rules is essential to obtain a pool permit within the City of Austin or any area serviced by Austin Energy. Let’s dive into these guidelines and explore what you need to know if you're considering installing a pool near power lines.
Austin Energy Rules for Pool Placement:
Overhead Electrical Lines:
The pool’s water edge must be at least 10 feet away from any overhead lines on or adjacent to your property, including those in easements or neighboring yards.
Underground Electrical Lines:
The pool’s water edge must be at least 5 feet away from any underground lines. These may be marked on recent building plans, but unmarked lines might only be discovered during the City of Austin's permit review process.
Meters and Pull Boxes:
Pools must be located at least 10 feet away from electric meters and electrical pull boxes. This rule also applies to pool equipment.
Automation Panels:
The automation panel on the pool’s equipment pad requires a clear 36-inch walk radius. Automation is included with all Tiny Pools.
Electrical Panels:
There must be 36 inches of unobstructed space around electrical panels, meaning your pool equipment cannot be placed too close to these.
AC Disconnects:
Pool equipment and the pool’s water edge must be at least 5 feet away from an AC disconnect.
Guy Wires:
The pool’s water edge must be at least 10 feet away from any guy wires, since they are considered “overhead distribution facility” capable of being energized.
Understanding and following these rules ensures a safe and compliant pool installation, meaning you are swimming and enjoying your pool sooner and not dealing with inspection headaches or money lost due to improper pool placement.
